Freestanding Emergency Department Director
Position Summary
The Director of Emergency Services provides strategic and operational leadership for a freestanding emergency department, ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. This leader is responsible for departmental performance, staff development, resource management, regulatory compliance, and patient experience initiatives. The Director oversees emergency services operations while collaborating with hospital leadership to drive growth, quality outcomes, and organizational goals.
In addition to Emergency Services, this role provides oversight and coordination for ancillary departments including Imaging, Laboratory, Patient Registration, Security, Environmental Services, and Support Services.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
- Direct the daily operations and strategic growth of Emergency Services.
- Identify operational challenges and implement effective solutions with appropriate follow-through and communication.
- Ensure departmental goals align with organizational objectives and quality standards.
- Promote operational excellence through efficient resource allocation, staffing, and budget management.
- Participate in hospital-wide committees and leadership initiatives.
- Build cross-departmental relationships to support organizational success.
Quality & Patient Experience
- Lead initiatives to enhance patient satisfaction and improve the overall patient experience.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate emergency services programs that support exceptional patient outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with clinical standards, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and organizational policies.
- Oversee quality improvement and performance improvement programs that monitor key patient care indicators.
- Establish and maintain processes that ensure consistent delivery of evidence-based emergency care.
Staff Development & Engagement
- Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and performance management for department leaders and staff.
- Support employee engagement initiatives and foster a positive workplace culture.
- Identify, develop, and mentor emerging leaders within the department.
- Conduct employee rounding and maintain open communication with team members.
- Ensure adherence to human resources policies and organizational expectations.
Safety & Compliance
- Monitor compliance with patient safety, employee safety, infection prevention, and emergency preparedness standards.
- Ensure adherence to exposure control plans, including protocols for bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
- Maintain compliance with all applicable state, federal, and accreditation requirements.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
- Master’s Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
Licensure & Certifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the practicing state required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification required.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of Emergency Services experience required.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership experience required.
- Experience leading emergency department operations, quality initiatives, and staff development preferred.
